REASONS WHY KENYAN LADIES PREFER MEN’S DEODORANTS

I’m jumping into the shower and my hubby shouts from the bedroom, “Have you seen my deodorant?” I hear him clearly but I go like… huh? “My deo!” I tell him to check on my dressing table. We have had a few arguments around me using his deodorant and his stand is clear — he prefers not to share. Ironical right? He is a diehard Old Spice guy and prefers Aqua Reef but has occasionally picked BearGlove and Swagger.

Don’t get me wrong, I have my feminine deodorant and I love it! My brand is Secret with a preference for the Passion de Tango Scent. It is a delicate scent with hints of exotic mango infused with crisp sweet pineapple that easily awakens the passion for Tango in me.

Old Spice Gives you Confidence and Power

The times I have used his deodorant I find myself smelling fresh even as I take my evening shower. I also like the subtle masculine scent that has a way of giving me some extra confidence and power. Don’t ask how, it’s one of those things that are hard to explain yet so evident.

I also remember growing up, my sisters would always go for men’s colognes and swear by them. This made me wonder if there is a thing about ladies inclining more towards using products made for men and why.

So I did this…

I did an informal survey in a large and exclusive ladies’ group on Facebook and found out that I’m not alone!

This is what I asked.

Why do ladies in Kenya prefer to use Old Spice Products ?

I got a good number of responses with most of the ladies explaining why they prefer to use not only men’s deodorants but colognes, lotions, and even shower gels! One lady even said she prefers to wear boxers! Yes! But that’s a story for another day.

The responses had emotional weight and humor. Allow me to share a few.

Here are the top picks…

• Their fragrances are just outta this world!
• I love them as they last longer and are not too strong for my nostrils
• Men’s deodorants actually work especially if you sweat heavily like ‘yours truly’ and they don’t have a plethora of weird scents
• I sweat a lot so normal lady deos are too weak for me.
• They actually work and don’t leave white marks
• I love their masculine scents. Cool and fresh all day…Harufu ya utajiri (The smell of wealth)
• We are not bees. The floral scents don’t work for us.
• They work for longer for me. Love the smells too, the smell lingers longer. Probably because men have more bacteria in their sweat, so the product is stronger.
• Za ladies ziko na kimbelembele fulani kwa harufu…mara zinanukia maua mara matunda mara zingine ziko na harufu ya food…I can’t (Lady deodorants are ‘too out there’ with some smelling like fruits and others food)
• They are mild and stay all day… Ziko tu na ka maturity fulani (They have some silent maturity)
• They are not pungent and choking compared to ours. I don’t know who told manufacturers that ladies need to smell like roses, rainbows, unicorns, pilau, dettol, harpic and everything choking at the same damn time.

These responses gave me a good laugh.

In a nutshell

Truthfully, a good number of ladies have always and still prefer to use men’s products over their feminine ones. The reasons for their preferences in the sampled responses are leaning more toward subtle masculine scents, more sweat and odor protection, and the quiet boost of confidence that comes with wearing men’s deodorants. I believe these responses speak for most ladies who prefer men’s products.
